Land Clearing & Fuel Reduction in Southern Oregon

Brush mulching, tree and stump removal, and defensible-space clearing for rural properties across Josephine and Jackson County. Make your land usable — and safer in fire season.

Reclaim Your Land — and Reduce Wildfire Risk

Southern Oregon’s beauty comes with a real wildfire reality. Overgrown brush, ladder fuels, and dead standing timber don’t just block your views and limit your land use — they turn into fire risk every summer. Blake Excavation clears brush, removes trees, grinds stumps, and creates defensible-space buffers around homes, outbuildings, and property lines. We work with homeowners, ranchers, and builders to get land back to a usable, safer state. We handle:
  • Brush & forestry mulching
  • Selective and full tree removal
  • Stump grinding and removal
  • Defensible-space clearing
  • Lot clearing for new construction
  • Pasture reclamation

When Land Clearing Is the Right Call

Wildfire defensible space: Clear vegetation in the critical 100-foot zone

New construction prep: Clear and grub a building site

Rural property reclamation: Take back overgrown pasture, fence lines, or driveways

View restoration: Selective tree removal for sightlines and light

Access road work: Clear and improve overgrown property roads

Our Land Clearing Process

  1. Property Walk — Identify what stays, what goes, and any hazards.
  2. Permit Check — Some clearing requires county or ODF notification — we’ll handle the paperwork side.
  3. Mulch Brush & Small Trees — Forestry mulcher takes brush and trees up to 8″ or so in place.
  4. Remove Larger Trees — Excavator with thumb or chainsaw crew for bigger timber.
  5. Grind or Pull Stumps — Below grade so you can mow, grade, or build.
  6. Final Cleanup — Haul off, burn (where permitted), or spread mulch on site.

Tools We Use for Land Clearing & Fuel Reduction

  • Forestry Mulcher: Grinds brush, small trees, and ladder fuels into mulch in one pass
  • Skid Steer: Hauls debris, runs mulcher attachment, and works tight access
  • Excavator with Thumb: Removes larger trees, pulls stumps, sorts debris
  • Chainsaws / Brush Cutters: Selective work and detail clearing
  • Dump Truck: Hauling off larger debris and timber when needed

Why Rural Property Owners Trust Us With Their Land

We know Southern Oregon forests and what actually counts as defensible space:

  • Forestry mulching leaves the soil intact — no scarring like a dozer push
  • Owner-operated means you walk the property with the decision-maker
  • Equipment owned = we can take on small parcels through multi-acre jobs

Land Clearing & Fuel Reduction FAQs

Fuel reduction is the removal of vegetation that would otherwise feed a wildfire — brush, small trees, dead standing timber, and "ladder fuels" that carry fire from the ground into tree canopies. Most Southern Oregon insurers and ODF guidelines call for 100 feet of defensible space around structures.

Both. We can either grind stumps below grade (so you can mow over them) or pull them with the excavator if you want them fully removed. Pricing varies depending on which you need.

Yes. We clear, grub, and rough-grade lots for new construction. Often paired with our soil grading service for finish prep — /services/soil-grading/

Small-scale clearing usually doesn't, but larger clearing — especially near streams, wetlands, or steep slopes — can trigger ODF notification, county requirements, or DEQ rules. We'll check before we start.

Three options depending on the job: forestry mulcher grinds it into mulch that stays on site, we haul it off to a yard, or we pile and burn it, where burn permits allow. Most clients prefer mulching for cost and soil benefit.

For most fuel reduction work, yes. It's faster, cheaper, leaves the soil intact, and creates a mulch layer that suppresses regrowth. Burning has its place but is increasingly restricted in Southern Oregon.
